Don’t get me wrong. The latest version of Lightroom is really nice. Its performance has been improved a little bit. Lightroom 5 uses much more RAM than version 4.3, but you can still import a 300MB RAW burst very easily. You can even edit the history and you will be provided with backup copies of the edited files before you edit them further. But, I still need 4 GB of RAM to use Lightroom, just like before. It takes about a third of a second to import a RAW burst, or about the same amount of time to export an edited version of a burst, or about 8 seconds to import a single RAW file or to export a 3D histogram. It’s still not the fastest, but it’s far better than Lightroom 4. The import/export performance has been a bit better (no more 15 seconds or more), but still slower than in version 4.2. Lightroom 5 uses a bit more memory in the catalog size, but that doesn’t have to be a problem for now. As long as you have enough RAM, you won’t notice that.
Nothing has changed in LR5 significantly. I managed to import a 640×480 JPEG and import a RAW burst in about 1,500 milliseconds. However, I couldn’t pump that much temporal resolution into the 3D LUT dialog – it just hangs for more than 20 seconds to process an image. On my computer with 4 GB of RAM, the 3D LUT processing time is 3-4 seconds, and the same with JPG processing – 2-4 seconds. As long as you don’t edit JPGs in Preview, you won’t notice much difference with the performance. I’m not sure why I didn’t see any changes in the new version, but they are surely worth mentioning. One of those is the new option to rotate images during Import. At first, I didn’t like the fact that you can’t rotate the images in the library, but it made me reconsider. As I believe that rotating the Raw files in the library would be more intuitive, I can see what the developers were thinking when they implemented this feature.
